Two guitars close to completion
My first topic on my own Blog! Here are two new guitars getting close to completion for a couple of talented local players at the University of Queensland. They are about 1 week from completion, so close to the moment of first stringing when the true nature of my work is revealed. This photo is just after buffing which is the final process in the finishing except for some waxing by hand. The process starts with rough sawn timber planed and sanded to assemble, and then the surface preparation starts. Sealing and filling the grain with several materials, and then the main body of nitrocellulose lacquer. After the lacquer has rested for 2 weeks I feel ready to start cutting by hand with 3 different grades of wet and dry paper, and then onto buffing with 3 grades of cutting compound. Long and labourious work but worth it to bring out the grain and expose the beauty of the timber. The timbers shown here are Queensland Maple for the neck, with some nice figure, and East Indian Rosewood for the body.
